Maltese is a Curry alumnus, and Fan is a former Curry faculty member. The authors examined survey and transcript data of more than 18, 10th-grade students to uncover explanations for academic performance. The data focused on individual classes, examining student outcomes through the transcripts from two nationwide samples collected in and by the National Center for Education Statistics. Instruction in Virginia's public schools is guided by the Standards of Learning. The standards describe the commonwealth's expectations for student learning and achievement in grades K in English, mathematics, science, history and social science, technology, the fine arts, foreign language, health and physical education and driver education. The commonwealth and its public schools also provide specialized instruction and programs for gifted students, students with disabilities, English language learners and children in schools serving economically disadvantaged communities. Virginia LEARNS: Navigating Virginia Education in Uncertain Times provides recommendations and identifies resources and best practices related to equity, curricula — especially in literacy and mathematics — remediation and intervention strategies, assessments, data analysis, student and staff wellness, and technology to support instruction and learning.
